Awake Craniotomy

IBS team of neurosurgeons perform awake brain surgery for tumors that have spread throughout the brain and do not have clear borders. Awake brain surgery can shrink these tumors successfully.

What is Awake Craniotomy Surgery ?

Awake craniotomy is a brain surgery performed while you are awake, reducing the risk of damaging critical brain areas that control speech and other skills. The procedure is generally performed to treat various brain conditions, including some brain tumors, epileptic seizures etc.

Neuro-navigation is used to determine the exact position of incision and exposure of brain. After exposing the brain, speech areas are mapped. While the brain area to be excised is exposed, your surgeon may ask you questions and monitor the activity in your brain as you respond.

The tumor or the culprit area is then removed while the speech test continues. After the tumor or the culprit brain area has been removed, all bleeding is stopped and the thick membrane surrounding the brain is closed with sutures. The bone flap is then replaced with three mini plates.

You are shifted to OT for a procedure. You are given anesthesia before surgery. Post-procedure, you will be moved to the normal room.

You would be slowly mobilized by rehabilitation team. You will also undergo mild physiotherapy. Your catheter would be removed and you would be encouraged to use a regular washroom.

Discharge process is undertaken. You will be explained about the discharge medication and follow up. You will be discharged in stable condition.

In the follow-up process, your incisions will be inspected and you will be asked to visit the doctor after 7 days for stitch removal. You should see improvements in your seizures after surgery if you had awake craniotomy for epileptic seizures within 4-5 days.

Some become seizure free immediately while others see the decrease in the frequency after surgery. A very few people see no change in seizure frequency.

You may return to normal activities within 3-6 weeks after the surgery. You would also be requested an appointment with the doctor within three months.
