Spinal Fusion or Lumbar Fixation

What is Spinal Fusion (Spine Surgery)?

Spinal fusion is a surgical technique where we connect two or more vertebrae in your spine. The procedure is helpful in eliminating the pain which is caused by abnormal motion of the vertebrae.

Why is Spinal Fusion done?

The procedure is generally done in the lumbar (lower back) region of the spine, but may also be used to treat cervical and thoracic problems. The Patients requiring spinal fusion are mostly seen to have neurological deficits or severe pain which has not responded to regular treatment.

There are various conditions requiring spinal fusion. This includes degenerative disc disease

  • Scoliosis
  • Discogenic pain
  • Spinal tumor
  • Vertebral fracture
  • Spondylosis
  • Kyphosis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Other degenerative spinal conditions
  • Any condition that causes instability of the spine
How is it done?

The procedure involves the fusion by a process called fixation, meaning the placement of metallic screws. The screw, rods or plates, or cages helps to stabilize the vertebra and facilitates bone fusion. The fusion process generally takes around 6-12 months after surgery.

During this time external bracing (orthotics) may be required and there are External factors such as smoking, osteoporosis, certain medications, and heavy activity which could even prevent the fusion process. In case the fusion does not occur, patients may require re-operation. Risks & Complications

During the spinal injury, there are several risks and complication which may include
  • Bleeding after surgery
  • Infection requiring antibiotics
  • Blood Clots
  • Instrumentation problems- loosening of instruments after surgery
  • Complications associated with Anesthesia
Alternatives to spine surgery

There are several other alternatives to spinal fusion such as weight loss and use of medication to relieve pain. Other options include Physical therapy and orthopedic braces which may aid in decompressing or mobilizing the spine using non-invasive or mechanical techniques.

Convalescence

Post surgery some may experience back pain and will have to use a brace. The surgery in adults is time taking and even the recovery time seems to be longer than in children.

Candidate eligibility

The surgeon will make final decision for this back surgery after an examination and consultation with the patient. The right candidate for the treatment includes those who have an episode of low back or neck pain at least once in their lifetime. In most of the cases the patients can manage their back or neck pain without needing to see a specialist. But, however there are cases where the pain persist and shows no improvement after conservative treatments. In such conditions spinal interventions may be the best solution to manage pain.
