What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome ?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that causes pain, numbness and tingling in the hand and arm caused by a pinched nerve in the wrist. It gets worse over time so early diagnosis and treatment is important. To prevent permanent damage, surgery is recommended to some patients.

The surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome is known as carpal tunnel release. It can either be done via open surgery or via the endoscopic procedure. In open surgery, a small incision is made in the palm of the hand and views the inside of the hand and the wrist. The surgeon will divide the transverse carpal ligament. This increases the size of the tunnel and decreases pressure on the median nerve. After the surgery, the ligament may gradually grow back together and the pressure on the median nerve will be relieved.

In an endoscopic procedure, the doctor makes one or two smaller skin incisions called portals. A miniature camera is inserted through the incisions to view the inside of the hand and the wrist. A special knife is used to divide the transverse carpal ligament which eases the pressure on the median nerve.

Day 1

After the physical assessment, you shall be medically investigated for your Knee problem. Once investigations and medical assessment are completed your surgery shall be planned. You will be advised to get admitted on the day of surgery.

Day 2

Discharge process is undertaken. You will be appraised about the post-discharge exercises to be done at home and will also be explained about the discharge medication and follow up. You will be discharged in stable condition.

Follow up and Recovery

In the follow-up visit, the doctor will see the healing process. When the knee has healed, physical therapies will be suggested to improve your mobility. You will also be able to perform normal activities.
