Empowering Lives through ACDF: Your Path to Comfort

Discover the transformative world of Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) at IBS Hospital. Our specialists employ cutting-edge techniques to alleviate neck pain and restore neck mobility, providing you with a brighter, pain-free future.

What is ACDF?

Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) is a minimally invasive spinal surgery performed to remove a damaged disc that is causing pressure on the nerve root, thereby alleviating pain. In this procedure, an incision is made in the throat area to access the front of the cervical spine.

Following a physical assessment, you will undergo medical investigations for your spinal problem. Once investigations and medical assessments are completed, your surgery will be planned, and you will be advised to be admitted on the day of surgery.

The disc material that is pressing on the spinal nerve or spinal cord is completely removed. The bone channel through which the spinal nerve runs is enlarged with a drill, providing the nerve with more space to exit the spinal canal. A PEEK cage is placed between the vertebrae to prevent them from collapsing and to enhance fusion.

What is the process / patient journey for ACDF at IBS Hospital?

Day 1:

The procedure is explained to the patient/ relative in detail and consent is undertaken. Pre-Anaesthesia Checkup (PAC) is done. An intravenous line (IV) is given to provide fluids. You are shifted to OT for the procedure. You are given anesthesia before surgery. Post-procedure, you will be moved to Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and once fully awake, you will be moved to the hospital room. You shall be given a cervical collar or brace to provide support while your neck is healing.

Day 2:

You are monitored in the room and shall be given appropriate medication including pain relievers. You will undergo mild therapy to help heal and strengthen your cervical spine.

Day 3:

Pain management and physical therapy shall continue as per your medical status. Discharge process is undertaken. You will be appraised about the post-discharge exercises to be done at home and will also be explained about the discharge medication and follow up. You will be discharged in stable condition.

What is the post-surgery follow-up and recovery timeline?

You will be advised to visit the doctor after 7 days. Additionally, you will receive recommendations for physical and occupational therapy to help you regain your normal activities of daily living. Its important to avoid bending, twisting, and lifting for a period of time after surgery. You should refrain from driving a car until you are out of the cervical collar and have sufficient neck range of motion for safe driving.

Follow-up appointments are necessary to monitor the progress of your recovery. If the spinal cord was injured due to a neck fracture, extensive rehabilitation may be required. Patients should attend physical therapy sessions for two to three months. Over time, active treatments will be introduced to stabilize your neck and upper back.
