What is Emergency​ ?

The emergency is the medical specialty which is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of unforeseen illness or injury. All the early initial evaluation and coordination of care among multiple providers and disposition of any patient requiring medical and surgical care comes under emergency. The medicine given is not defined by any particular location or specialty.

It may be practiced in different multi and super specialty hospitals or stand-alone emergency departments, urgent care clinics, and observation medicine units or even via telemedicine. There is a need for urgent and prioritized medical attention for the emergency cases. Emergency physicians are responsible for initiating resuscitating and stabilizing and treating illness in the acute phase.

Emergency if not treated on time can also be fatal. Severe pain is sometimes considered a medical emergency. Pain that comes with kidney stones and appendicitis is a common example. It includes acute and critical care of internal medical and surgical conditions. The doctors or physicians who are given the responsibility of handling emergency cases requires a broad field of knowledge of including surgery, trauma resuscitation, advanced cardiac life support etc.

The subspecialties include critical care medicine, medical toxicology, wilderness medicine, pediatric emergency medicine, sports medicine, disaster medicine etc. If we especially take about emergency medicine specialist, then they have proper planning, oversight and medical direction for emergency and disaster preparedness. Some of the common examples of the medical emergency are given below –

  • Chest pain that is accompanied by sweating, nausea, and vomiting.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Radiating pain that moves to the arm or neck.
  • A sensation of choking.
  • Severe bleeding that is not stopping even after applying 15 minutes of direct pressure.
  • Broken and displaced bones due to accidents.
  • Severe burns.
  • Not being able to walk and feel one or all parts of the body.
  • Swallowing of poison.
