What is Urodynamics Labs​ ?

The urodynamic lab is a critical laboratory in which diagnosis of urological diseases is made. It identifies the urinary outflow obstruction and lower urinary tract dysfunction. The diagnosis of these procedures are carried out in a specially made lab which calculates the urinary obstruction by measuring the amount of urine, a rate of flow in seconds and length of time it takes.

This lab basically finds out how well the bladder and urethra are performing their function of keeping and removing urine. It is performed in urology, gynecology, OB/GYN, internal medicine and primary care offices. Explanation of the following symptoms is found out in the urodynamic lab –

  • Frequent urination.
  • Incontinence.
  • Urinary tract infections.
  • The problem in urination with an occurrence of pain.
  • Strong urge to urinate but with no discharge.
  • Incomplete emptying of the bladder.

Procedures

Uroflowmetry – it is the test done to measure the amount of urine that is released during urination. Along with this, the speed of urination is also measured. It is recommended to you to measure weak urine system and difficulty in urinating. A decrease in urine flow suggests that you have weak bladder muscles and increase in urine flow suggest that you have weakness in the muscles that help control the urine flow.

Cystometry – the test done to look for the problem with the filling and emptying of the bladder is known as cystometry. It measures the amount of urine that is present in the bladder. It is done to find out the problems with the bladder and measure how much urine is stored in your bladder.

Cystography – it is an imaging test which uses X-ray to find out the problems and complications in the bladder. In this procedure, a urinary catheter is inserted and a contrast dye is injected into the bladder. It is used to find out the cause of blood in urine, recurring urinary tract infections, urinary reflux, urinary incontinence etc.
