Arthritis of the hip is an ailment which wears away the ligament in the ball-and-attachment joint at the highest point of your leg bone (femur) and pelvis. Due to this wearing effect the two bones scrape with each other. Because of the wearing effect the joint gets hollowed, dissolved, and uneven resulting in stiffness, and instability. Now and again, movement of the leg gets restricted.

What is a Hip Replacement?

Hip Replacement is a procedure for the treatment of Hip Arthritis and the purpose of total hip replacement is to remove two damaged and worn parts of the hip joint. The hip socket and the femoral head replace them with smooth, artificial implants called prostheses, which makes the hip strong, stable, and flexible again.

In younger individual’s, those who need a hip replacement there is a high possibility that a traditional hip replacement will wear out during their lifetime and need to be replaced again and second replacement is not possible.

How is it done?

The individual undergoing treatment may be asked to wear anti-embolism stockings to decrease the risk of developing blood clots. There is a small drainage tube which is placed to help drain excess fluids from the joint area. The Rehabilitation and physical therapy are started immediately post surgery and continues for one year after surgery.

Why is it done?

Relief from pain is the greatest benefit and the major reason for hip replacement surgery. Basis to reinstate all or part of the hip joint include: severe pain from arthritis or injury in the hip that restricts an individual’s ability to do the things they want to do, fractures in the elderly of the neck of the femur, and the incidence of hip joint tumors.

Risks & complications

There may be several risk and complications that can be associated with anesthesia, including respiratory or cardiac malfunction.

Other complications could be:

  • Blood clots in the legs (deep vein thrombosis), which can dislodge and move to the lungs (pulmonary embolism).
  • Infection which may require antibiotics and in few cases hospitalization. Infection can sometimes occur around the hip joint years after the surgery.
  • Damage to nerves or blood vessels.
  • Fracture or dislocation of the new hip joint may require additional surgeries.
  • Retention of urine and bladder infection.
  • Instability or stiffness of the joint caused by extra bone growth.
With time - sometimes as long as 20 years - the artificial joint will loosen and a revision surgery might be required.

Risks can be reduced by following the surgeon's instructions before and after surgery.

Candidate eligibility

Candidates who are the right contenders for Hip Replacement will be evaluated on various parameters including degree of disability impacting the lifestyle of individual and previous restorative conditions. The surgeons are always the decision maker of every patient’s qualification and whether he needs to be treated or not. Assurance to go for a rehabilitation program is important since improvement of the new hip joint is largely determined by the patient’s full involvement.
