What is a Total Knee Replacement?

Total Knee Replacement could be defined as a surgery to replace diseased or damaged joint surfaces of the knee with metal and plastic prosthetic devices.

How is it done?

Most of the surgery is performed under a general or spinal anesthesia. While performing the procedure the surgeon shaves the joint cartilage at the ends of the femur and tibia and fits them with prosthetic caps. Next they are re-attached to the remaining bone with specialized cement. After the surgery the patient returns with a large dressing on the knee area. We place a drainage tube to help drain excess fluids from the joint post surgery. The patient is recommended to wear pressure stockings immediately after surgery as it prevents blood clotting

Why is it done?

The knee replacements procedure is carried out to reduce severe pain from arthritis or injury in the knee. Such pain limits an individual’s ability to do even the daily normal activities. Moreover it might be performed to remove tumors of the knee.

Risks & complications

There are conceivable dangers and intricacies connected with anesthesia, including respiratory or cardiac malfunctioning. Different inconveniences incorporate the likelihood of:

  • Infection requiring anti-biotics and at times hospitalization
  • Infection happening around the joint years after the surgery
  • Blood clumps in the legs (profound vein thrombosis), which can oust and move to the lungs (pneumonic embolism)
  • Injury to nerves or veins
  • Loosening or separation of the prosthetic gadgets
  • Joint solidness
Dangers can be diminished by following specialist's both before directions prior and then afterward surgery.

Alternatives

There may be alternative approaches to the total knee replacement procedure, with:

Non-Surgical Alternatives:
  • Walking aids such as a walking stick or cane or fitting with specialized braces
  • Intake of Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin, ibuprofen and celebrex to relieve pain
  • An exercise regimen to strengthen the muscles in the region of the knee joint to improve positioning and relieve pain
  • There are certain corticosteroids such as prednisone or cortisone which can reduce joint inflammation
  • even herbal supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin is suggested
Surgical Alternatives:
  • Knee fusion
  • Arthroscopic surgery
  • Osteotomy
  • Cartilage transplant
Candidate eligibility

The right candidates for total knee replacement should never suffer from infection. To find out the right candidate an extensive pre-operative assessment is done for the total knee replacement procedure. Ultimately the surgeon will make the final decision of each patient’s eligibility for the procedure after a thorough check up and consultation with the patient. Post operative recovery is decided largely by patient self trials.
