What is Traumatic Brain Injury?
A traumatic brain injury (TBI) happens when a strong hit, jolt, or blow to the head or body harms the brain. However, TBI can also occur if an object penetrates the skull and damages brain tissue.
Alternative Names for TBI
TBIs are also known as:
- Brain injury
- Head injury
- Intracranial injury
- Closed head injury

What Happens to the Brain After TBI
Not every external hit can lead to a TBI; however, when it does, it can affect the way the brain functions.
- The brain can experience swelling, bruising, or bleeding.
- Nerve fibers get damaged, disturbing communication between the brain and body.
- Brain cells begin to die.
- The brain’s ability to think, memorize, and feel gets affected.
- A person can experience headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and coordination issues.
Some TBIs are considered:
- Primary TBI: This means the damage is immediate.
- Secondary TBI: Means they can happen slowly over the course of hours, days, or weeks after injury.
The Different Types of TBI
Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs) are classified based on the type of external force and severity.
A. Based on External Force
- Penetrating TBI (also called open TBI): It happens when an object pierces the skull like a bullet, shrapnel, or bone fragment and enters the brain tissue. This type typically damages only part of the brain.
- Non-penetrating TBI (also called closed head injury or blunt TBI): It happen when an external force strongly hit against the skull and move the brain within the skull. The reasons can be falls, motor vehicle crashes, sports injuries, blast injury, or being struck by an object.
B. Based on Severity
- Mild TBI (Concussion): A temporary alteration in mental state. This may or may not cause brief loss of consciousness or amnesia.
- Moderate/Severe TBI: It can lead to significant and longer-lasting effects. Person can experience prolonged loss of consciousness, coma, or permanent brain damage.
Traumatic Brain Injury Symptoms
The symptoms of traumatic brain injury depend on the type and severity; some of the common symptoms are:
1. Headache
It can happen due to brain tissue damage or swelling irritating pain-sensitive areas.
2. Dizziness or Imbalance
A person can experience loss of balance due to injury to the brain's balance centers.
3. Confusion or Disorientation
Damage to areas like the frontal lobe that manages attention and awareness can lead to confusion and disorientation.
4. Memory Issues
If TBI affect brain area like hippocampus or temporal lobe this can lead to difficulty in recalling memories.
5. Nausea or Vomiting
Nausea and vomiting can indicate injury in the brainstem injury interfering with autonomic functions.
6. Blurred or Double Vision
Blurred or double vision can indicate damage to the occipital lobe or optic nerves, affecting the brain's sight processing centre.
7. Mood Changes or Irritability
Injury to emotional control centers in the frontal lobes can cause mood dysregulation and irritability.
8. Fatigue or Drowsiness
Brain injury disrupts normal sleep-wake cycles and energy regulation, leading to constant fatigue and drowsiness.
9. Seizures or Convulsions
Brain injury can disturb the brain’s electrical activity, leading to seizures or convulsions.
10. Clear Fluids from Nose or Ears
Clear fluids from the nose or ears can indicate cerebrospinal fluid leakage from skull fractures affecting protective brain layers.
Causes of Traumatic Brain Injury
There are many causes of TBI; some of them are:
- Falls (the most common cause)
- Car accidents (3rd most common cause)
- Firearms
- Physical assaults
TBI Treatment Options
The TBI treatment is based on the types and their severity. Your doctor at a best hospital like IBS hospital will customize the treatment based on your condition:
- Rest and monitoring to avoid worsening of the condition.
- Emergency stabilization to ensure sufficient blood and oxygen flow.
- Surgery to remove blood clots and repair skull fractures.
- Medications like anti-seizure, anti-anxiety, antidepressants, muscle relaxants, and diuretics are used to control symptoms and risks.
- Rehabilitation therapies in IBS hospital, including physical, robotic, occupational, speech, cognitive, and psychological therapies for faster recovery and living an independent life.
Concussion vs Traumatic Brain Injury
Here is the table that will help you understand the basic difference between Concussion vs Traumatic Brain Injury:
| Feature | Concussion | Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) |
| What is it | Mild form of TBI. It can lead to temporary brain function loss | Any brain injury from an external force or object entering the brain. This can cause severe brain dysfunction |
| Severity | Generally mild | Mild, moderate, or severe |
| Symptoms Duration | Usually short-term | Can be long-lasting or permanent |
| Extend of Brain Damage | Usually no visible damage on scans | May have bruising, bleeding, nerve fiber damage |
| Treatment Options | Rest and management of symptoms | Rest, emergency care, surgery, medications, rehabilitation |
| Risk Level | Typically lower | Higher risk of lasting impairments |
| Long-term Impact | Some may experience post-concussion syndrome | Cognitive, physical, and emotional dysfunction |
| Example | Common in sports injuries | Car accidents, falls, assaults, and military comba |
