What is Autism?

Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), encompasses a diverse range of developmental brain abnormalities. Individuals with ASD display unique behaviour, learning, communication, and social interaction differences compared to typical peers. It is a congenital condition affecting approximately 1 in 100 children, with some cases diagnosed later in life.

What are the different categories of Autism?

Autism is broadly classified into the following different types:

  • Aspergers Syndrome: People with this type often have higher intelligence and good verbal skills, but they may struggle with socializing and interacting with others.
  • Childhood Disintegrative Disorder: Also known as Hellers Syndrome or disintegrative psychosis, it involves delayed development or loss of language and motor skills.
  • Kanners Syndrome: It is often called classic autistic disorder, it is characterized by difficulties in emotional attachment, communication, speech, and interaction, even in individuals who seem intelligent.
  • Pervasive Development Disorder: A milder form of autism with delayed development of language, movement, and motor skills.
Recognising the Symptoms of Autism

Children suffering from ASD present with a diverse set of symptoms or indications. The pattern is unique for every child and varies in terms of severity. Some symptoms may be diagnosed during infancy while others do not show till adolescence. Common symptoms that you need to look out for include:

  • Not responding when being called out
  • Resisting physical contacts like handshakes and hugs
  • Lack of facial expression and inability to maintain eye contact
  • Inability to start or maintain a conversation
  • Delayed development of speech and language abilities
  • Difficulty understanding simple conversations and phrases
  • Inability to display appropriate emotions
  • Reacts aggressively or passively to certain situations
What causes Autism?

The cause of ASD is not specific and involves a combination of factors. Some factors that increase the risk of ASD include:

  • Having a sibling with autism
  • Family history of ASD
  • Certain genetic conditions such as Rett syndrome and fragile X syndrome
  • Birth-related complications
  • Premature birth
  • Being born to older parents (late pregnancy
Diagnosis of Autism

Autism cannot be diagnosed through a specific medical test. Instead, it is diagnosed through a comprehensive assessment of the individual’s behaviour. Diagnosis can occur as early as 18 months, but in most cases, it is made when the child is older.

Management / Treatment of Autism at IBS Hospital

While researchers tirelessly work towards finding a permanent cure for autism, our treatment approach focuses on achieving significant improvements in managing symptoms and enhancing children’s abilities to interact and respond effectively. Our preferred treatment options include:

  • Behaviour and communication therapy to address language and socializing challenges.
  • Educational therapies for personalized interventions in language, speech, and learning.
  • Family therapies to enhance social interactions and communication skills.
  • Medication to manage symptoms like depression and anxiety.

In addition, we are actively involved in research studies exploring the potential of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) as a treatment option for specific autism symptoms, with a focus on social communication and repetitive behaviours. Some studies suggest that TMS may have the potential to modulate brain activity and improve social cognition in individuals with autism. Our team continues to explore innovative approaches to provide the best care for individuals with autism and their families.
