What is Vascular Dementia?

Vascular Dementia is a type of dementia caused by brain damage from disrupted blood flow. It can happen after a stroke, which reduces oxygen supply to brain cells. But not every stroke patient gets Vascular Dementia.

Recognising the Symptoms of Vascular Dementia

The symptoms of Vascular Dementia bear resemblances to those seen in other types of dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s Disease. Common symptoms include: 

Cognitive Symptoms:

  • Confusion
  • Declined attention span
  • Slowed thinking
  • Loss of memory

Physical Symptoms:

  • Unsteady gait
  • Restlessness
  • Orthostatic hypotension
  • Urinary and bowel incontinence

Emotional Symptoms:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Misplacing items

What causes Vascular Dementia?

Vascular dementia is caused by brain damage resulting from restricted blood flow due to the following:

  • Stroke
  • Brain hemorrhage
  • Narrowed blood vessels due to aging, plague, or hypertension

Listed below are several factors known to increase the risks of vascular dementia:

  • Advanced age (more common in people above 65)
  • Personal history of stroke or heart attack
  • Atherosclerosis (build-up of plaque in the arteries)
  • Elevated cholesterol levels
  • Uncontrolled hypertension or diabetes
  • Excessive smoking
  • Obesity
  • Atrial fibrillation

Diagnosis of Vascular Dementia

Diagnosing vascular dementia requires a combination of tests to assess cognitive decline and risk factors. Common recommended tests include:

  • Lab tests for blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol assessment
  • Blood tests to rule out thyroid and vitamin deficiencies
  • Neurological and physical assessment
  • Brain imaging through MRI and CT scan procedures
