Types

A clot - ischemia - in the blood stream, or a bleed - hemorrhage, are the most likely reasons for a stroke.

Ichemic strokes may be due to:

  • Atherosclerosis / blocked arteries
  • Heart defects
  • Family history

And a hemorrhagic stroke may, at times, result from:

  • Hypertension
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Drug abuse
  • Aneurysms

A third variety of stroke may be a ‘Transient Ischemic Attack’ - i.e a mini-stroke from a temporary obstruction, lasting a few minutes to hours. Excessive smoking, underlying heart conditions, diabetes, cholesterol may be potential reasons. A TIA is perceived as a warning sign for stroke - beware!
