What is Endoscopic Discectomy?

Endoscopic discectomy is a minimally invasive procedure which is used to remove herniated disc pressing on nerve roots and causing pain in the lower back and limb(lumbar), or neck or arms(cervical). In this procedure, mild anesthesia is provided and a small metal tube is inserted into the spine which serves as a passage for surgical tools. A piece of herniated disc is pulled out with a grasper under the guidance of the X-ray fluoroscopy and direct visualization. The incision is then closed with a stitch or two. The whole procedure of discs herniation takes about 30 to 45 minutes, the patient goes home on the same day.

What are the advantages of Endoscopic Discectomy ?

Endoscopic Discectomy has the following advantages:

  • Shorter recovery time
  • Higher success rate
  • Minimal blood loss
  • Local anaesthesia
  • Same day surgery
  • Minimal scar tissue
What is the process for patient admission, surgery planning, and discharge for Endoscopic Discectomy at IBS Hospital?

Outpatient Surgery / Same day discharge:
Patients admitted to the hospital receive a detailed explanation of their procedure and provide consent. A pre-anesthesia checkup (PAC) is conducted, and upon clearance, the patient is transferred to the operating room (OT). Post-procedure, patients move to the recovery area, then their respective rooms once stable. Discomfort may occur, and analgesics are provided. Patients are typically discharged on the same day. For spinal problems, after a physical assessment, outpatient medical investigations are conducted. Once complete, surgery is planned, and admission is advised on the surgery day. The spinal procedure usually takes 30 to 45 minutes, with same-day discharge.

What is the post-surgery follow-up and recovery timeline?

You may be advised to visit the surgeon for stitch removal after one week. Follow-up appointments are essential to ensure proper healing. Initially, you may experience some soreness and pain, which can vary depending on the type of surgery performed. It’s also common to have bruising around the surgical area.
